MP3 TAKES: Maceo Plex Helps Framework Add Another Epic Location to its Repertoire

As a native Angeleno, I must have driven over the 4th Street bridge hundreds of times, day and night. But I never noticed on the corner of 4th and Merrick, just before you angle up to cruise over the LA river, a geometric black sculpture sitting at the head of an empty lot.

Being that it’s LA, it could have easily been a random piece of modern art built as part of the revitalization of the Arts District. However, it is actually a part of the campus of the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Specifically, it’s known as the League of Shadows Pavilion, and last Saturday the stalwart DJ and producer, Maceo Plex, brought the pavilion into the shadows with booming underground dance music.

This event was the debut of yet another epic location from Framework. Framework is responsible for hosting events in compelling venues all around Los Angeles such as Under Construction with Fisher and Chris Lake on Hollywood Blvd, Duke Dumont at Red Studios Hollywood, WhoMadeWho at Union Station, and now the League of Shadows Pavilion at SCI-Arc.

Entry to the event was seamless. There was plenty of space to keep the incoming lines off the street with the existing layout of the pavilion, and once we rounded the corner to arrive on the dancefloor, we saw the skeletal architecture of the League of Shadows structure illuminated to where its design was enhanced without being overpowered.

Framework added some its own lighting and production, but for the most part, they used the structure to its full potential. Maceo Plex is the kind of DJ who can’t be attached to one style, so his diverse tracks would be matched by an equally diverse visual experience. Faster beats saw quick-moving lasers fly from within the structure, while more melodic tones prompted a wash of kaleidoscopic colors to meld around the structure’s edges.

In standard Framework fashion, Maceo had command of a full-three hour set, prime for taking listeners on an exciting journey. After the success of this event, many more dancers will take a journey to SCI-Arc in the future.
